Freiburg Academy

In the 1990s, SC Freiburg were the first German team to be known specifically as a "feeder club". Freiburg's high-quality, sustainable and strategic approach has since enabled them to establish themselves as a regular Bundesliga participant. In addition to the first-class development provided at Freiburg's academy, one of the most notable qualities is the exceptionally high rate of youngsters promoted from the youth teams to the senior squad.

In the first half of the 2017/18 season, Freiburg ranked above all other Bundesliga clubs with around 5000 first-team minutes going to home-grown players (source: Kicker). The fact that the 2009 squad that achieved promotion to the Bundesliga contained 12 home-grown players is a testament to the commitment, consistency and dedication that has been placed in the Freiburg academy since its construction in 2001.

At the head of the Freiburg football academy is Andreas Steiert (2nd from left). Since July 2015, he has been assisted by Tobias Schätzle, the academy's organisational director (4th from left).

Martin Schweizer (far left), who has worked as an academy coach for many years now, is the academy's sporting director - of course in close coordination with the rest of the academy's coaching staff and the first-team coaches.

Markus Kiefer (far right) and Stefanie Nerling (middle) work as full-time teachers to make sure that the students' schooling and vocational training is well-organised, as well as keeping in contact with the parents. In addition, they also provide social care, looking after the boys day and night, all week long.
