Even as a youngster, Freiburg tried to sign Luca Itter from Eintracht Frankfurt's U17s. But the Gießen native chose instead to join VfL Wolfsburg. The Lower Saxony club gave the left back his Bundesliga debut at 18, but only six appearances followed. "We never took our eyes off of Luca," says sporting director Klemens Hartenbach, speaking the summer acquisition. "He is talented, technically solid and the fact he is left footed is an advantage," adds head coach Christian Streich about the Germany U20s international, who has progressed through every Germany national youth team since U15s. In 2016, Luca Itter was awarded a gold prize in the German Football Association's (DFB) Fritz-Walter-Medallion for the Best Youth Player in his age group.
