SC Freiburg defender Kenneth Schmidt has completed a transfer to Fortuna Düsseldorf for an undisclosed fee.
The 23-year-old was on loan at Hannover 96 for the second half of last season, but only featured for the club’s reserves in the 3. Liga due to injury. Schmidt played five games for SC’s U23s in the Regionalliga Südwest in the first half of the campaign.
Born in Freiburg, Schmidt joined the Freiburg Football School from FC Emmendingen in 2017. He made a total of 60 appearances for the U23s, earning promotion to the third division with them in 2021. Schmidt’s professional debut came in the second leg of SC’s Europea League last-16 tie against Juventus in March 2023. The centre-back played a total of ten Bundesliga and two Europa League matches for the Breisgau club.
“Our goal will always be to have as many lads from the region in our squad as possible. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out that way,” said SC sporting director Klemens Hartenbach. “Together with Kenneth, we decided that it would be best for his development if he took his next steps somewhere else, and we wish him all the very best.”
SC Freiburg would like to wish Kenneth good luck for the future!
