The German Football Association (DFB) has announced the timings for the first round of fixtures in the DFB-Pokal. SC Freiburg will open the 2021/22 season away at Würzburger Kickers on Sunday, 8th August (18:30 CEST).
For Würzburg, the cup game will be their third match of the new season. They will open their 3. Liga campaign away against TSV 1860 München and will host SC Verl the week prior to the Pokal. The side have faced Bundesliga opposition already during pre-season, losing 2-1 to 1. FSV Mainz 05 on the weekend. Würzburg will face newly-promoted Bundesliga side Greuther Fürth in a friendly on 14th July.
The cup game will be the first meeting between the sides. SCF have faced a side from Würzburg before, however, with four matches against Würzburger FV in the second division in 1978/79 and 1979/80. This season, the Freiburg reserves can look forward to facing Kickers in the league, with the first meeting set for the end of August.
