Wherever Wooyeong Jeong goes, good energy seems to follow him. We sat down for an interview with the 21-year-old attacker before the home fixture against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday (15:30 CEST).

Wooyeong, there always seems to be a positive mood when you’re around. Why is that?

Maybe because I sleep well and then spend the day having fun with my teammates (laughs).

Has it always been like that?

I’ve always been a happy person, ever since I was a kid.

What do you think creates a good team spirit?

For me, it’s really important that we as a team speak to each other a lot - amongst ourselves but also with the coaches. Sometimes after training, the players go and eat something together, and afterwards the communication is better on the pitch and people joke around more. I think you need this kind of time together.

You have been in Germany for three and a half years now, starting out with Bayern in their youth team. How are you getting on with the language here?

I still find it difficult to understand German, but I try to listen a lot and after training I often sit down at home to learn new things.

What is your favourite word at the moment?

‘Balleroberung’ [interception] (laughs).

That could be a crucial word on Saturday. We’re finally going to play a competitive fixture in front of our fans again! Are you ready for that?

I’m always motivated, but I’m definitely looking forward to playing in front of the fans.

You watched Dortmund play Frankfurt together as a team on the way home from Bielefeld. What did you think of the game?

Dortmund played really well and beat Frankfurt 5-2, but we are also a good side, we have been training well and are not afraid. We know that we can win the game if we play well, and that’s what we want to do. Of course it helps us to have the fans back.

In the 0-0 draw with Bielefeld, you were in the starting XI for the second time in the last two matches, even though you had an extended holiday because of international duty. Was it tricky to get up to speed in training?

It's true that I did have two more weeks of holiday and our fitness coach Daniel Wolf also said that I didn’t have to do anything during that time because I had trained a lot up to that point. To be honest though, I couldn't bring myself to take a break for the full two weeks. I started to train a bit again after one.

We’re hoping that your hard work will pay off again on Saturday. What do we need to do to take points off Dortmund?

We did play well in Bielefeld, but of course it’s not always easy in the first Bundesliga game of the season. We have to focus in training, practise our shooting as much as possible and then maybe we can win on Saturday.
