We spoke to Mark Flekken on the phone after the 2-2 draw against champions FC Bayern and ahead of Saturday’s season finale against Eintracht Frankfurt (15:30 CEST).

scfreiburg.com: Flekki, how are things at the hotel?

Mark Flekken: All good. We’ve just had our lunch and now we’re all going up to our rooms. Tonight is the video analysis from the Bayern game.

What have you taken with you to stop you getting bored?

I put the PlayStation to one side a little while ago, but I’ve got my Switch here. I’m enjoying playing that a lot more than FIFA at the moment.

We remember your strong performance on FIFA in the Bundesliga Home Challenge last year. What do you play on the Switch?

Only Mario Kart – that’s my favourite right now. Janik Haberer and Kübi have also brought one, so we play together now and again.

Because of this coronavirus enforced training camp, you are only training in the stadium and then spending the rest of your time in the hotel. What does your day look like away from the family?

Taking today as an example: We had a quick test and a PCR test at 8:00 this morning. We ate breakfast at 9:15 and then headed to the stadium at 9:45 for training at 10:30. After that, we went back to the hotel, showered and then had lunch. Next on the schedule is our video analysis from the Bayern game at 18:30. We’ll then have dinner at half 9 and then go to bed after that.

So it’s not so bad?

Yeah, the hotel is really good and the food’s nice too. Despite that, I’m really excited to be able to go back home soon.

Talking of making a return: you played in the Bundesliga for the first time in Köln after eight months out injured. How did that feel?

I have to say that I started to get a bit nervous the night before the Köln game, but it was a healthy tension – I was still excited for the game. I was happy to be back with the lads on the pitch and doing what I love. I played three times for our reserves in the Regionalliga before making my first-team comeback and that was really helpful for me to get back into the swing of things.

Your comeback was really successful too. We won 4-1 in Köln before drawing 2-2 with FC Bayern last weekend.

Being back on the pitch was a great feeling, especially because we took four points from the two games, which is even more satisfying when one of the opponents was Bayern. I didn’t have too much to do against Köln, but that wasn’t the case against Bayern. I was able to frustrate Robert Lewandowski at the end, although I couldn’t stop him from equalling the record.

You mentioned his penalty in the 26th minute, which saw him score his 40th league goal of the season to equal Gerd Müller’s all-time record. Does it bother you that you will always be associated with this goal?

It doesn’t, no. I just happened to be the goalkeeper who he scored the 40th one against. The others conceded the other 39, so I’m not alone!

Saturday sees us end the season with a trip to Frankfurt. What’s the plan for the finale?

Our aim is to fight hard for the three points. If we do well and other results go in our favour, we could still reach Europe. We’ll just have to see if we’ve done enough in the end – the other sides’ fate is in their own hands.

Frankfurt have the third-best attack in the league this season, having scored 66 times. What should we be preparing for against Eintracht?

The statistics obviously don’t lie – they are hungry for goals. One thing that might help us, though, is the fact that their final position in the table is already decided. They may well give a few chances to players to impress and those players will want to do just that. We will need to play as well as we did against Bayern. If we do that, we’ve got a good chance.
