Incredible support and the chance to secure Europe again
On Matchday 33, SC Freiburg travel to Hamburger SV (Sunday, 15:30 CEST) for their final away game of the Bundesliga season.
“Today we had 34,000 against eleven,” Igor Matanovic said after a historic Thursday night game which saw SC book their place in the Europa League final, with the forward reflecting on the incredible atmosphere at the Europa-Park Stadion. While Matanovic will not be able to again rely on the support of tens of thousands of Freiburg fans in the stadium on Sunday, the number of travelling Freiburg supporters heading to the north of Germany is still hugely impressive.
Around 4,200 away fans will follow SC Freiburg to the Volksparkstadion for what will be their 28th away game of the season – further proof that not only the team but also the SCF fanbase are fully embracing the demands of the hectic schedule that Freiburg have dealt with over recent weeks. It’s something that has not gone unnoticed by head coach Julian Schuster: “A massive thank you to our fans! Firstly for the support on Thursday, which was incredible and helped show the world what kind of club we are and what fantastic supporters we have. And also for their willingness, given this schedule and everything that comes with it, to continue backing us on these trips away. We really appreciate it.”
That willingness to go the extra mile will also be required on the pitch against the Rothosen, with SC Freiburg still firmly in the race for European qualification through the league route. With two matches remaining, SCF sit seventh, one point ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt, a position that would secure a place in the UEFA Conference League play-offs. Following Frankfurt’s defeat on Friday evening, Schuster’s side could secure more European football for definite next season with a win against Hamburger SV on matchday 33.
Schuster has no concerns that his side will need time to switch back into league mode after their emotional Europa League semi-final victory. “The way the team immediately refocuses on the next game shows their character. We’re well-positioned to take the next step on Sunday.”
In terms of personnel, things also remain in good shape, aside from the injured Yuito Suzuki, Patrick Osterhage and Max Rosenfelder. “The lads have come through Thursday’s game well. There are the usual knocks after such an intense 90 minutes, but we can plan with everyone for Sunday,” the 41-year-old confirmed.
