Giving up is not an option
Season Statistics Part II
It’s been over three weeks since the 2025/26 season drew to a close. We’re taking a final look back at the campaign just gone in the second part of our statistical season review.
Racking up the mileage
In the first half of this series, Maximilian Eggestein was in the spotlight, with nobody in the German top-flight able to match the midfielder for distance covered. Even in a club-by-club comparison, though, SCF are there or thereabouts with the best in the business. A total of 4,117.8km in the legs of the Freiburg first team puts them behind only TSG Hoffenheim (4,171.7km) and FC Bayern München (4,163.1km). To put that number into perspective: as the crow flies, that’s roughly the distance between Freiburg and the northern Nigerian city of Zaria.
Never back down, never what?!
The level of sheer resilience shown by the team across the whole season can actually be evidenced by one of the several club records smashed in 2025/26. In the Bundesliga alone, SC managed to come back from a losing position to either draw or win on a whopping 10 occasions. A total of 20 points were picked up in this manner. The league phase of the Europa League also saw Freiburg snatch a draw in Bologna (1-1) and three points in Nice (3-1) from the jaws of defeat.
One person’s mid-table is another’s Champions League
When it comes to possession statistics, SC are ranked around the middle in the German first division. The table-toppers in this respect are, you guessed it, record champions FC Bayern München. When looking at the fair play table, however, Freiburg make it into the Champions League spots – only 1. FC Heidenheim, FC St. Pauli and RB Leipzig sit ahead of SC.
Sights trained on goal
Let’s take a look at some individual records now. With 15 goals across the Bundesliga, Europa League and DFB-Pokal, Igor Matanovic finished 2025/26 as SC’s most prolific man up top. Vincenzo Grifo is close behind, having struck true 14 times, while Yuito Suzuki makes the podium with nine. In terms of total goal contributions, it’s Grifo who pulls well clear of the competition: the German-Italian winger put up 24 combined goals and assists last year, with Matanovic (19), Suzuki (16) and Johan Manzambi (16) all following behind.
Matthias Ginter, attacking ace
It wasn’t just Matthias Ginter’s sound defensive work that drew attention last season. With five goals and eight assists in 52 competitive appearances, the central defender produced an impressive season going forward. Only the 2015/16 season had previously seen him put up as many goal contributions as that, when he was playing his football at Borussia Dortmund.
You shall not pass
Philipp Lienhart didn’t pop up in attack as often as his centre-half partner Ginter, although the Austria international can boast to be the best dueller in Breisgau after recording impressive statistics in this respect last year. Lienhart won 64.5% of his duels, the eleventh highest success rate in the league. He’ll hope to be just as strong at the heart of his national side’s defence at this summer’s World Cup.
The unsung heroes
A stat that’s rarely brought up in conversations about football is pre-assists – the pass that directly leads to an assist proper. In Johan Manzambi (eight) and Niklas Beste (nine), SC had two specialists in this regard last season. Both players sit in the top ten in the division by this metric.
A difficult man to stop
Manzambi can once again claim to match up to the best of the best when it comes to our next (and final) statistic. The Switzerland international was particularly tricky to tackle by fair means, and was fouled a total of 76 times. Only Antonio Nusa (RB Leipzig) and Michael Olise (FC Bayern München) were more often unjustly felled in the Bundesliga in 2025/26.
