Promotion to the third division with the U23s in June 2021, debuting in the Bundesliga in September and scoring his first professional goal. 20-year-old attacker Noah Weißhaupt, who has been at the club for ten years, speaks to the club about the past few months and looks ahead to the future.

scfreiburg.com: Noah, in our matchday Q&A, you answered the question, “What are people envious of about me?” with, “Always being in a good mood”. What’s the secret behind that?

Noah Weißhaupt: I can’t really say. I just know that since my childhood I’ve always been like that. I’m always just feeling good and hardly ever have a bad day.

The way things are going on the pitch at the moment can contribute to that.

Definitely.

Bundesliga debut and an assist or your first professional brace in the 3. Liga against Türkgücü. What was the more defining moment for you?

It’s hard to compare, because the two leagues are so different, but I’d say my Bundesliga debut. That was simply a world-class feeling. The coaching staff wanted to throw absolutely everything out there to get a point – and it worked out (laughs).

You could say so. You’d been on the pitch for two minutes before assisting the equalising goal. Currently you’re back and forth between the first team and the reserves in the 3. Liga. If we take the current week as an example, when do you find out whether you’ll be in the squad for a home game against Mainz on Saturday or travelling to Braunschweig with the U23s on Friday?

It’s usually at short notice, because recently it’s not been clear which players are available and can get through the week of training without injury. Generally speaking, I’ll find out what my weekend is going to be like on Thursday.

How do you manage to prepare for the respective game?

I’m always prepared for both. Also, I feel really comfortable within both teams. I’ve known a lot of my teammates from the second team for years, whereas I was really well taken in by the first team. So I can switch pretty quickly and focus on the upcoming game depending on which squad I’m in.

Julian Schuster, as youth coordinator, is the link between the first team squad and the reserve team. How important a role does he have for you?

Schusti pays a massive role. He helps us a lot, for example with the video analysis and tells us where we can improve.

This is your tenth year at SC Freiburg. When you look back at your time, what was your best moment here?

I don’t have to think about that one for long – my Bundesliga debut!

Understandable. Just like the fact that you want to get as many more minutes as possible in the top flight. Nevertheless, even in the third division you give your all in every game. You're committed.

Defintiely. Of course, I give my all in the 3. Liga. That’s also a professional league where the tempo is much higher than it was last season for us in the regional league and the physicality is on another level. There are a lot of traditional clubs, like Osnabrück or even Braunschweig, so it’s really fun. In addition to that, the 3. Liga is a great platform to show yourself. If I do well in that league, I’m making a good case for myself for more Bundesliga appearances.

What goals did you set for yourself ahead of the season?

I definitely hoped to make my Bundesliga debut this season. I’ve managed that now. So with that being said, I’d like to add as many more minutes as possible as possible.

Who else do you get footballing advice from, not including your coaches and teammates?

It’s actually just from my father. He calls me after every game and gives me a few tips on what I could do better. I’m always happy to take them on board because I know he was a good footballer himself.

You mention that you come from a football family. Your father, Marco, also played for SC Freiburg in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Is your free time all about football?

It might sound a bit strange, but it’s actually the opposite. I like to meet up with friends and go bowling or something. I like to switch off from football in my free time. Aside from the Champions League or World Cup final, I don’t watch any football matches. Football isn’t really a big part of my private life.
