Stoking the fire away at Osnabrück

First Team
25.10.2021

On Tuesday evening (20:45 CEST), SC Freiburg visit VfL Osnabrück in the second round of the DFB-Pokal.

Christian Streich and his team will not have a lot of time to enjoy their win against VfL Wolfsburg, their ninth league game in a row without loss. On Tuesday evening the Breisgauer face their next challenge as they take on VfL Osnabrück in the cup.

Osnabrück defeated SV Werder Bremen 2-0 in the first round, whilst SCF went through after a 1-0 win over Würzburger Kickers. A narrow victory that should serve as a blueprint for what awaits the team in Osnabrück on Tuesday: A third division side with a huge amount of motivation to upset the favourites.

Christian Streich is accordingly wary of VfL. “Osnabrück are a good footballing side and a top team in the third division. We will approach the game with the right attitude and give them the proper respect,” said Streich, who analysed their opponents 0-0 draw against Hallescher FC. “Normally they would win the game. Just before the final whistle, they had a huge chance to get the three points. We know that we will be up against a really good third division team.”

The longest serving Bundesliga coach is also ready for a proper atmosphere at the Bremer Brücke. “It’s one of those stadiums that you like to go to because the atmosphere is so passionate,” said Streich ahead of the second round clash.

Streich did not want to reveal whether they would see a week with two games as reason to rotate the starting eleven. However, Jonathan Schmid and Kimberly Ezekwem (both still recovering) will be unavailable, as well as Yannik Keitel (quarantining after a positive Covid test) and Roland Sallai.
