The final day in Frankfurt

First Team

SC Freiburg’s final game of the 2022/23 season is away to Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday 34 (15:30 CEST).

SC’s long season finally comes to an end in Frankfurt this Saturday, the 47th competitive game for Christian Streich’s side, but not one without meaning. Freiburg still have the chance to qualify for the Champions League – going into the final matchday, SC are level on points with Union Berlin (54), but behind them on goal difference. Union, in fourth, host Werder Bremen on the final day. “We want to play well in Frankfurt and try to get the win. If Union win then so be it, I can live with that,” said Streich. “We’re full of ambition.”

SC will be supported by 5,100 fans in Frankfurt, with the away end completely sold out. Nicolas Höfler will not feature on Saturday after his red card against Wolfsburg. “He wasn’t happy with the red card and will be replaced by Yannik Keitel this weekend,” revealed Streich. Despite his suspension, Höfler will still travel to Frankfurt upon Nils Petersen’s wish, who wants his long-term teammate with him as he plays his final game for the club.

Similar performance to the one against Wolfsburg

Streich described the game at Deutsche Bank Park as a “difficult one.” The coach added: “It’s always tough in Frankfurt, maybe we can win away. I expect a lot of my team, but I don’t have to say much to them. They all know why we won against Wolfsburg and why we were 3-0 down early on in Berlin. The lads will give everything and try to perform like they did against Wolfsburg.”

Eintracht, who also played in three competitions this season, have had an up and down Bundesliga campaign. They go into the final matchday in eighth place, but still have a DFB-Pokal final to look forward to. Frankfurt will face RB Leipzig in Berlin on 3rd June, where they have the chance to qualify for Europe once again. That final will be Oliver Glasner’s final game in charge of the club.

Streich, on the other hand, will of course be remaining at Freiburg. The 57-year-old is looking forward to a few weeks off. “I’m good, but I’m on the brink. I don’t want to speak anymore or take any more photos. I’m excited for some peace and quiet, the chance to read and to drink some water and eat some good food.” He can do all that once Saturday’s game is done and dusted.
