SCF captain Christian Günter spoke after the team’s farewell game at the Dreisamstadion.

scfreiburg.com: Günni, what are your favourite films to watch at home?

Christian Günter: My wife and I generally watch Netflix shows – at the moment it’s Élite.

Do you have a favorite genre?

Not really, I like watching all sorts. Comedies are always good, that way you can laugh a bit. But I’ve also seen Avatar, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter so I like a wide range of things.

You yourself played your part in a historical drama. What would have been the title of the final match at the Dreisamstadion?

Crikey, tough question. One title isn’t enough for everything that happened in the Dreisamstadion. It deserved so many different ones. A piece of history was written here; the fans shaped the whole thing and filled it with life. The atmosphere was always sensational, whether we were going through a good or a bad period. I can barely remember a single game where the atmosphere was poor or we were booed off.

Very true.

The fans have carried us over the years, and that was also the case on Sunday. The way the game went was, of course, also good for the mood in the stadium and the crowd urged us forward. You can see everyone’s emotion in the pictures from after the game. You could feel how much has happened here. We were able to celebrate that once again, so I would say that it was definitely a successful film that was shot here.

Christian Günter played a starring role as captain, and was also playing his 300th game for the club. What a story!

(he laughs) Everything really came together. The only thing missing was the 1,000th goal, which would have been the cherry on the cake. Saying goodbye to the stadium in my 300th game is something special that I’ll never forget.

Do you remember your first Bundesliga game?

(he grins) Yes! I’ll never forget that one either. I came on against Greuther Fürth, the way from the south stand to the front. The nerves were extreme because I knew that I was about to enter the fray. I played against Felix Klaus, a good friend of mine and Gerald Asamoah also came on, I also know that. We won 1-0 in the end. I can’t remember every detail of the game anymore, but the exceptional moments are still there.

Your debut came on the 8th December 2012. Nearly nine years later, the last Bundesliga game took place at the Dreisam stadium. Is there a melancholic feeling around the place?

Of course there was some sadness on Sunday. We’ve all experienced a lot here, the people at the club, the fans, me personally. It was nice that it was a fitting farewell. Now we need to look forward and we’re all excited to get going in the new stadium, which looks a real gem. History will be written there as well.

On to the football itself, the match against FC Augsburg was really enjoyable to watch. Kübler, Höler, Grifo, 3-0. What did you make of it?

Because of the occasion, we came out of the locker room, started fast, were good with the ball but also in transition. You could feel that everyone wanted to win the last game more than anything. It was a bit more difficult in the second half. At 3-0 the opposition had nothing to lose, and we didn’t want to concede a goal that would have encouraged them and kept things tense. We managed it though and in the end we can be very, very pleased with the game.

We’ve had six Bundesliga matchdays already, and SC remain unbeaten. Why are we doing so well this season?

Sunday’s performance perfectly demonstrated just why it’s going so well for us. We may not have been overly convincing in some of our games, but we’ve also played incredibly well in others. Everyone is launching themselves into challenges, getting involved on the counter attack, and no-one is slacking. If you do all those things well, you’re bound to pick up points in the Bundesliga. If we play well and are also strong in all these areas, it’s highly likely we’re going to win, and we’ve been good at that up to now, with still some room for improvement, of course.

For example?

Looking at our games against Mainz and Köln, we sometimes lacked the technical ability to find a way through and didn’t create that many chances. That was very different on Sunday, despite there still being ways we could improve. If we continue on this path, we’ll carry on collecting points this year.

This weekend you’ve got a trip to Berlin. Hertha’s start has been something of a mixed bag. How do you see the game going?

When you look at their squad, you see that they have a lot of quality, of course. They have been very active in the transfer market in the last few years and signed a lot of players. Their team is always going to be dangerous and we know that on a good day, they can beat anyone in the Bundesliga. For us it’s a chance to make more ground on the position we got last weekend, and we know we’re difficult to beat.
