On Matchday 19 of the Bundesliga, SCF face SV Werder Bremen on Saturday at 15:30 CET.

Christian Streich was “very impressed” with the performance of SCF’s next opponents Werder Bremen during their 1-0 win in Munich. “They put in an incredibly good performance, won lots of individual battles and are playing really well. We’ll show the boys that and look for ways to counter it.”

Up to 1,700 fans will be able to support SCF at the wohninvest WESERSTADION. That is how many tickets will be sold for the away end, though the journey may be difficult for some due to train strikes.

A good record against Bremen

SCF are unbeaten in their last five games against SV Werder, having won the previous three. In the most recent meeting on Matchday 2, Maximilian Philipp scored an injury time winner for 1-0 just days after his return to Freiburg.

SCF head coach Streich highlighted the tactical consistency of the side from the north of Germany. “They have a clear game plan, because they always play the same basic formation.” They also bring calm build-up play and a good team spirit. “They’ll be really up for it in front of their enthusiastic support,” said Streich.

Two new signings as additional options

Both Kenneth Schmidt (abdominal muscle issues) and Philipp Lienhart (groin) have recently had to undergo operations. Manuel Gulde is meanwhile suspended after his red card in the 3-2 win over TSG Hoffenheim.

Following the loan signing of Attila Szalai (26), who joined on-loan from Hoffenheim, it’s all the more pleasing that SC’s latest arrival Florent Muslija (25) was able to be presented at Achim-Stocker-Straße on Wednesday evening. The Achern-born attacker previously played for second-division side SC Paderborn. Both new signings could be in the squad on Saturday. “We’re pleased that they’re here,” Streich said. “We can’t overload them and need to let them settle in first.”

SC’s head coach said the following about centre-back Szalai: “He’s an experienced player who hasn’t played a lot in the last couple of months, which seems simple. Now it’s all about him staying relaxed enough to perform because we know he’s desperate to show us what he’s capable of.

Streich also explained that the timing of Muslija’s move to the Bundesliga is ideal. “He’s had several interruptions to his career and certainly needed a couple of years to accept things and to learn. He’s on the right track.”
