SC Freiburg confirmed their direct qualification to the UEFA Europa League round of 16 on Thursday evening. Here’s everything you need to know about the next stage of the competition, as well as all the important dates.

When will the round of 16 take place?

The first leg is set for 12th March, with the second leg to be played a week later on 19th March.

When will the round of 16 draw be made?

The draw will take place on 27th February. The rest of the tournament bracket leading up to the final will then be determined.

Who could SC face?

Freiburg will be drawn against one of the following four teams: KRC Genk (Belgium), Bologna FC (Italy), Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia) or SK Brann (Norway). Two of these sides will make it through the playoffs and into the round of 16, with SC set to be drawn against one of them. Freiburg already played the 10th seeded Bologna in the league phase: “We’ve already been to Bologna, so we would know what to expect,” said head coach Julian Schuster. “We’ll just take the draw as it comes. It’s great that we’re in the round of 16, regardless of who we end up playing.”

Belgian side Genk finished the league phase in ninth place – just one point behind SC. They currently sit in mid-table in the Jupiler Pro League. Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb took the penultimate playoff spot in the league phase, having finished in 23rd place. They currently sit at the top of the Croatian Football League. SK Brann finished one place below Zagreb and took the last playoff place. The Norwegian Eliteserien begins in March, three days after the first leg of the playoffs.

What else is there to know?

As SC were one of the best eight teams in the league phase, they will play the second leg of the round of 16 tie on 19th March at home.
