SC Freiburg will face 2. Bundesliga side Fortuna Düsseldorf in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. The draw was made on Sunday at the German Football Museum in Dortmund.
While fans were getting in the mood for SC’s Bundesliga away game at 1. FC Köln in the RheinEnergieSTADION, just under 100 kilometres further north the second-round fixtures were being drawn, with Bundesliga record referee Dr. Felix Brych conducting proceedings.
After their opening-round win away to Sportfreunde Lotte, SC are again on the road, this time against the current 12th-placed side in the 2. Bundesliga. Daniel Thioune’s Fortuna Düsseldorf booked their spot with a 4-2 victory at third-tier outfit 1. FC Schweinfurt. Freiburg advanced with a 2-0 win in Lotte.
A total of 32 teams remain in the competition, all battling at the end of October for a place in the last 16. Only one Bundesliga side fell at the first hurdle – Werder Bremen, beaten 1-0 away at last year’s finalists Arminia Bielefeld.
The second-round fixtures will be played on 28th and 29th October. Exact dates and kick-off times are still to be confirmed.
