The midfielder initially joins Everton FC on a loan deal, with an obligation-to-buy clause triggered if the English side avoid relegation this season.
Merlin Röhl arrived at SC Freiburg from FC Ingolstadt in the summer of 2022 and initially featured for the U23 side in the 3. Liga. In March 2023, the midfielder came off the bench against Borussia Mönchengladbach to make his Bundesliga debut. Since then, the 23-year-old has made 60 competitive appearances for SC across the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and the Europa League, scoring three goals along the way.
Two spells out injured prevented Röhl from getting a consistent run of games in the last campaign. By the end of the season, he’d fought his way back into the side and was a part of the Germany U21 squad that finished as runners-up at the EUROs in Slovakia this summer. Röhl has made substitute appearances in all three competitive games so far this season.
“The interest from England has been there for a while, and now an agreement has been reached that satisfies all three parties,” said sporting director Klemens Hartenbach. “Merlin’s move to the Premier League shows once again that young players can confidently choose SC Freiburg to be a part of their footballing journey We wish Merlin all the best with the Toffees.”
