SC Freiburg have agreed a contract extension with head coach Julian Schuster. His assistant Lars Voßler and analyst Franz-Georg Wieland have also penned new deals, with Wieland’s official title now assistant coach for analysis.
Julian Schuster took over as head coach last summer after Christian Streich departed following 12 years in the role. Schuster previously worked as a coordinator of talent management and played for the club from 2008 to 2018, captaining SC for seven seasons. In 2024, the 40-year-old acquired his UEFA Pro License, the highest coaching badge in German football. His first year in charge of the team saw SC finish fifth in the Bundesliga to qualify for this season’s UEFA Europa League.
“Julian and his team did some incredibly impressive work last season,” praised chief sporting officer Jochen Saier. “Julian brings a tremendous level of expertise and identification with the club. The team’s development is clearly moving in the right direction and there’s a real sense of togetherness. It just feels right. That’s why we’re delighted to have extended his contract.”
Julian Schuster added: “The club and this region mean a lot to me. We have just had a great year and managed to develop a number of good things, not just our final position in the table. I’m delighted to be able to continue working on the team’s development together with my coaching team and the backroom staff.”
Lars Voßler and Franz-Georg Wieland have also agreed new contracts. Voßler, who previously worked in the club’s academy as a youth coach, has been an assistant coach in the first team since January 2012. Wieland, now an assistant coach for analysis, is set to go into his second season with SC’s first team. The rest of SC’s coaching team consists of assistant coaches Florian Bruns and Patrick Grolimund, goalkeeper coach Michael Müller, fitness coaches Daniel Wolf and Maximilian Kessler, and new individual coach Felix Roth.
The contract details will all remain undisclosed.
