SC Freiburg have signed forward Igor Matanovic from Eintracht Frankfurt. The 22-year-old arrives with experience across the Bundesliga, 2. Bundesliga and European competition.
Born in Hamburg, Matanovic came through the youth ranks at FC St. Pauli and made his professional debut in the 2. Bundesliga at just 17. In August 2021, he signed with Eintracht Frankfurt but remained with St. Pauli on loan for the following two seasons. He then spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Karlsruher SC, scoring 14 goals and providing seven assists in 32 appearances for the Baden club.
Last season, Matanovic featured 25 times for Frankfurt across the Bundesliga, Europa League and DFB-Pokal, scoring twice. In September 2024, the 1.94-metre-tall striker made his senior debut for the Croatia national team and has since earned five caps, scoring once.
“Igor has a really exciting profile,” said chief sporting officer Jochen Saier. “He’s alert, physically strong, and always a threat in front of goal. He also brings the right attitude and a strong work ethic. We’ve shown in the past that, with patience and the right environment, we can help players take the next step and unlock their full potential.”
Matanovic said: “I’m absolutely delighted the move has gone through. SC Freiburg strike me as authentic, close-knit and ambitious – and I’d describe myself in exactly the same way. That’s why I’m convinced it’s a perfect match. Now I just can’t wait to get started and train with the lads.”
The contract details will remain undisclosed. Matanovic will wear the number 31 shirt for SC Freiburg.
