We’ve taken a look back at the statistics, milestones, patterns and firsts from the 2024/25 Bundesliga season.
European qualification despite a -4 goal difference
Had SC qualified for the Champions League on the final matchday, they would have become the first club in league history to do so with a negative goal difference. In the end, Freiburg came fifth, becoming the first team to end a Bundesliga campaign in this position having conceded more goals than they scored since 1. FC Kaiserslautern 25 years ago. The only other teams to previously do so were Hamburger SV in 1970/71 (-9) and Borussia Dortmund in 1969/70 (-7).
Most goal involvements
Wingers Ritsu Doan and Vincenzo Grifo were SC’s most dangerous players throughout the 2024/25 season. Grifo scored eight goals and set up 11 across the 34 matchdays, while Doan netted 10 and assisted eight, making him the team’s leading goalscorer this term. Lucas Höler ranked third in this regard, scoring six times and also providing five assists.
A consistent campaign
SC spent almost the whole season in the top half of the table, only dropping down to 10th place on matchday 2 and matchday 19. SC even topped the table after victory against VfB Stuttgart on the opening weekend. Overall, Freiburg spent 21 matchdays in the top six.
Number of shots taken
When it came to the number of shots taken, SC only ranked joint 14th in the division (together with 1. FC Heidenheim), recording exactly 400 over the course of the 2024/25 season. 49 of Freiburg’s shots hit the back of the net, the 11th most goals in the league. Julian Schuster’s team also hit the woodwork on nine occasions.
Body on the line
SC’s hardest-working player over the course of the season was Maximilian Eggestein. The midfielder covered 370.53 kilometres, the equivalent of almost eight marathons!
When it comes to distance covered per game, Nicolas Höfler and Eren Dinkci topped the club’s internal rankings (of players to play at least half of all matches). ‘Chicco’ averaged 12.44 kilometres per 90 minutes, Dinkci 13.24.
Ritsu Doan played the most minutes within the Freiburg squad (2,860), closely followed by Eggestein (2,845) and Philipp Lienhart (2,769).
“We also want to have the ball”
Although this quote from Christian Streich is a few years old now, things haven’t changed under his successor Julian Schuster. SC averaged 49% possession this past season, ranking them eighth in the division in this regard. A pass completion rate of 81.9% also has Freiburg in midtable of this ranking.
Pace to burn
Two Freiburg players were among the 20 quickest footballers in the Bundesliga this season. Max Rosenfelder ranked 19th with a top speed of 35.91 km/h, closely followed by Christian Günter (35.87 km/h).
SC full-back on his toes
With a total of 65 interceptions across 28 appearances, at an average of 2.48 per 90 minutes, Lukas Kübler was right up there when it came to interceptions across the whole league. Only Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Rocco Reitz (2.49) averaged more per 90 minutes.
A tricky customer
Ritsu Doan with the ball at his feet is often an incredible sight to witness. The Japanese winger combines skill with pace, while his low centre of gravity makes it hard to get the ball off him. Overall in 2024/25, Doan completed 55 take-ons (42% - the fifth-highest rate in the division).
Getting stuck in
Matthias Ginter won 63.8% of his duels this past season, the 10th best rate in the whole division. Freiburg’s new signing Anthony Jung actually ranked second in the whole league (67.2%), only behind a former SC defender, Keven Schlotterbeck (70.2%). Lukas Kübler won the highest percentage of his aerial duels for SC (65.6%).
Creativity in abundance
Vincenzo Grifo created 16 big chances in 2024/25, the fourth most in the whole league. Only superstars Michael Olise (29), Florian Wirtz (17) and Joshua Kimmich (16) managed to set up more clear-cut opportunities for their teammates.
