Matthias Ginter extends his contract
SC Freiburg have agreed a new deal with Matthias Ginter, keeping the experienced centre-back at the club.
Matthias Ginter first joined the club’s academy at U13 level, progressing through the youth ranks before making his Bundesliga debut in January 2012. The centre-back joined Borussia Dortmund in summer 2014 before moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach in July 2017. He returned to SC Freiburg in July 2022 and is now 32 years old. Ginter has made a total of 255 appearances for SC, scoring 20 goals and providing 19 assists.
“Matze is a key figure in our team,” said chief sporting officer Jochen Saier. “The quality and consistency of his performances have been hugely impressive, and he’s played an important role in the team’s development. Even after so many years in professional football, Matze is still as driven and ambitious as ever. We’re delighted that he’ll be staying with us.”
Matthias Ginter said: “SC has been a huge part of my life since I was a kid, when I used to stand in the children’s section at the Dreisamstadion. The way the club has developed since then has been incredible. We want to keep building on what we’ve achieved together and continue pushing ourselves.”
The details of the contract will remain undisclosed.
