One big goal in sight
Conference League: Play-off second leg against Motherwell
SC Freiburg host Motherwell FC in the second leg of their UEFA Conference League play-off on Thursday at 18:45 CEST.
The way SC Freiburg are viewed both in Germany and further afield has changed considerably in recent years, as the title of Motherwell’s first-leg highlights video shows. “No fear against a European giant” it reads. That may seem slightly surreal from a Freiburg perspective, but it’s understandable from Motherwell’s point of view given SC’s strong performances on the European stage in recent years.
Vincenzo Grifo has no problem accepting that Freiburg go into the second leg as favourites, not least after last week’s 3-1 victory. Nevertheless, the winger warned: “It was an important win for us and put us in a good position. But we know from last year that losing the first leg doesn’t mean it’s over.”
Both Grifo and head coach Julian Schuster are also well aware of Motherwell’s qualities. “They’re good at playing out from the back and that starts with the goalkeeper. They’ve got plenty of pace going forward as well, with players making runs from deep. Our big goal is to reach the league phase, and we’ll need a good team performance tomorrow to do that,” said Schuster, adding: “Football has a habit of producing unexpected stories, so we know exactly what we’re up against.”
After two successful and goal-filled away trips to begin the season, Julian Schuster’s side will play in front of their own supporters for the first time on Thursday, looking to extend the club record of 11 consecutive home wins in European competition. “Of course we want to show what we can do at home,” said Grifo ahead of the first home game of the season, which will also be attended by 1,500 travelling Motherwell supporters.
There was also positive news on the injury front. Berkay Yilmaz has returned to team training following illness, Max Rosenfelder is available again after a short spell out and Rhihito Yamamoto is continuing to make progress.
