The 2020/21 season is over and preparations are already underway for the next. Read on for an overview of SC Freiburg’s summer plans.
The summer break is officially underway at SC Freiburg, with some exceptions.
SC captain Christian Günter, has been called up to Germany’s EURO squad by head coach Joachim Löw, while Lienhart (Austria) and Sallai (Hungary) will also be taking part in the tournament. Ermedin Demirovic (Bosnia & Herzegovina), Changhoon Kwon (South Korea) and Wooyeong Jeong (South Korea U24s) are also all away on international duty. Yannik Keitel and loanee Nico Schlotterbeck took part in a training camp with the Germany U21s. Schlotterbeck is in the squad for the knockout stages of the U21 EUROs, where Germany will take part in semi-finals on 3rd June. Keitel was forced to return home early from camp due to injury.
Whether Günter will come up against any of his teammates at this summer’s European Championship will be up to chance. The tournament will begin on 11th June in Rome and end on 11th July in London.
A week prior to the EURO final, the SCF first-team members will be returning to work. Head coach Christian Streich’s side will return to training on Monday, 5th July. Ten days later, SCF will head to Austria for a pre-season training camp from 15th to 24th July. The team will play four pre-season friendlies, with one opponent confirmed already. SCF will face third-division side 1. FC Saarbrücken on 10th July in Freiburg.
The 2021/22 season will kick-off for SC Freiburg with the first round of the DFB-Pokal the weekend of 6th-8th August. The Bundesliga season will get underway the following weekend, on 13th-15th August.
