The trip to Berlin has made us want more. SC Freiburg’s new DFB-Pokal campaign will get under way in Kaiserslautern after the first-round draw was made on Sunday evening.
Kevin Großkreutz was present to assist with the draw, and eventually drew out SCF’s ball at the 19th pairing. The opposition will be 1. FC Kaiserslautern, one of the four second-division teams in the amateur pot.
FCK secured their return to the second division last week with a win in the relegation play-off against Dynamo Dresden. The last time the two sides met was in the second division during the 2015/2016 season, when Freiburg won both games 2-0. The head-to-head record is also quite favourable, with SCF winning 17 times from 31 meetings, losing eleven. Freiburg U23s took on Kaiserslautern twice in the third division last season, drawing 0-0 at home and losing 3-0 away.
“This is probably one of the most difficult tasks the first round has to offer,” said assistant coach Patrick Baier after the draw. “However, I find it really appealing. It’s a great feeling to play in Kaiserslautern and I'm looking forward to the stadium and the game.”
The first round of the DFB-Pokal will take place between 29th July and 1st August.
